MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States, founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss, it dedicates its energy and resources to display the most experimental art in the world and invites artists to transform the building’s unique space.

This institution is affiliated with MoMA, being their principal objective to promote the enjoyment, appreciation, study, and understanding of contemporary art to a wide and growing audience.

One of their affiliation projects is the Young Architects Program, which gives emerging architects the opportunity to build projects conceived for MoMA PS1′s facility in Long Island City, Queens. The winner of this year’s edition is “Wendy”, designed by HWKN, a New York-based arquitecture firm. Now it is set to grace the Long Island City museum’s courtyard during the forthcoming summer months.

Wendy is an experiment that tests how far buildings can expand beyond the traditional boundaries of architecture into ecological and social effects. Its fabric skin is treated with titania nanoparticles that neutralize airborne pollutants. This summer Wendy will clean the NYC air to the equivalent of removing 260 cars from the road.

HWKN is seeking volunteers to help with the structure, for those who wish to contribute between 15 May and 26 June 2012, the volunteer application is available on: Wendy volunteer.

April 26th, 2012 is a date that will make history for Mexican Design. MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York with the help of the curator Ana Elena Mallet, bought products from 62 Mexican designers to have them on sale in their three New Yotk stores (the museum’s bookstore, museum design store and SOHO store), as well as their online store and upcoming at their Tokio store.

We had the chance to visit New York City and the events surrounding the inauguration, which all took place that same day:

The first, a reception at Mexico’s Official Residence, attended by the Economy Secretary Bruno Ferrari, Mexico’s Ambassador in the US Arturo Sarukhan, ProMéxico’s director Carlos Guzmán and the Consul Carlos Sada. They spoke about the current impact Mexican design is having on the countries economy as well as the relevance of its presence in New York City as a showcase towards the rest of the world.

The second was the launch party at MoMA’s Soho Store, with a great attendance of media and local personalities, where designers had the chance to tell the stories behind their objects. It also counted with MoMA’s staff and MoMA’s Retail Director Kathy Thornton-Bias, who gave a speech at the event.

During the event, CENTRO University of Design, Film and Media and ProMéxico launched the Directory of Contemporary Mexican Design, which features the work of 373 designers in five categories.

At the end there was a small party for the designers who attended.

This events gave us the chance to meet a lot of people, as well as hang out with great designers like Alejandra Antón, Andrés Lhima, Mauricio and Sebastián Lara, Cecilia León de la Barra, Ezequiel Farca, Héctor Esrawe, Ariel Rojo, Neko Design, Pirueta, among others.
